THANK YOU
This has been an extraordinary fest. Our drop-out rate and pinch hitter requirements were so low, I was incredibly impressed not just by the artist turnaround time by almost everyone, but also the amazing quality of art produced. Artists: you amaze me with your dedication to this. Thank you!

Thank you to my co-mods [livejournal.com profile] bzzinglikeneon and [livejournal.com profile] itsbeenvery, who did all the gritty stuff that I was too lazy/disorganized to do! This fest, like the fanartist community, was a joint effort.

Special thank you to our pinch hitters [livejournal.com profile] nightambre and [livejournal.com profile] craterchest, who were magnificent and intrepid. Thank you also to [livejournal.com profile] keraha, [livejournal.com profile] dun and [livejournal.com profile] adalanne for letting us re-gift - you're all life-savers!

Even more thank yous to everyone who left feedback, and promoted the fest on their own journals, and rec'ced their favourite artworks, and who just plain love fanart enough to encourage and comment and cheer. You're what make drawing in fandom so wonderful and rewarding.

FEEDBACK
As before, we are always interested in hearing your feedback. This is our second year doing this, and we love to know how we can improve and what we should keep doing.

1) What did you enjoy about Yuletart?
2) What would you like to improve about Yuletart?
3) How did you find the deadlines?
4) Did you get enough reminders/info about deadlines?
5) Were the 5 -6 art postings per day too many/not enough, too long/too short?

If you'd rather comment anonymously, IP logging is turned off. Alternately, you can always email us privately with any concerns: yuletart AT gmail.com.

Thanks again to everyone for making such a great start for 2009!

Okay, I have a very, very interesting question that'll have to do with next year's challenge: My art medium is fairly... unusual I think is the word. (The end product would be something like this - artwork is my friend's since I'm still new to it.)

Would that be accepted for Yuletart?

So, this is not my first participation and I won't comment anonymously because well, there's nothing to hide at that point. ^^"
For me the deadlines were perfect, maybe it wasn't for some people who participated in a few other challenges but for me it was great.
The reminders were very polite and believe me it's really appreciated !

My only "problem" comes from the art posting ; it was cool but... last year, the cool thing was that Christmas lasted for nearly a month or two and that was funny to receive gifts until February. But I understand if it was really too much work for the mods. Also, this year, as all the art was posted during the holidays, people weren't motivated to comment on five or six pieces a day, I know that I was with my family, didn't spend a lot of time on internet and I have to catch up and comment everything now. It's a bit sad because I remember last year people were giving much more feedbacks and discussing about the art. So maybe next year we could go back to the previous posting system ? If it's not too much for the mods, for sure, I can understand it's a lot of work.
ratcreature: RatCreature is thinking: hmm...? (hmm...?)

[personal profile] ratcreature 2009-01-05 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think the comment numbers aren't necessarily dependend on the posting schedule.

I mean, it could be for some people, like you say, but the main reason for me not commenting on art was that I didn't know the fandom. I know others like fanart whether they know the fandom or not, but for me I have to at least heard a bit about it to care and to think of anything to say. I don't know any of the manga/anime fandoms, because I'm just not into Japanese fandoms at all, and I didn't know all of books either, and only about half the tv series. I assume that is similar for a lot of participants. I liked that there were several posts a day, because that meant that usually at least one or two pieces would be from a fandom I know of.

It ran very smoothly this year and was a lot of fun. The deadlines worked okay for me -- I always tend to procrastinate anyway, but then usually buckle up, and the reminders were great.

I liked the 5-6 art posts a day, and that it was a shorter time frame than last year, because there wasn't such a long period between submissions and the many of the posts. It really felt like an event. And with a couple of artworks every day, I usually had at least one from a fandom I was familiar with at least in passing every day. I liked that.

Great work by the mods.

I think that as some of the artists did an extra thoughtful work with this, the original pictures were also bigger, more detailed, and generally asking for high resolution internet publishing. However, for the viewing convenience and for keeping peoples' internet connections working, the picture sizes were asked to be kept reasonable.

Anyway. Maybe it would be a good idea to ask beforehand if someone would be willing to host high-res pictures in their domains for free? Or host them in the like-neon.com, I don't know who owns that (but thank you for that!). So, if it wouldn't be too much work (it might be), an option for an artist to also put up a high res/otherwise large (think wallpaper) picture would be nice. The high res would be linked from the regular size picture post. Just a thought.

Overall, I have nothing bad to say! the deadlines were smooth, the fandoms were varied, the reminder mails weren't irritating. I'm all good. Remember to send a reminder mail in ten months ;)

I really enjoyed seeing so much great art posted, some of it in fandoms I had never even heard of before. I also very much enjoyed doing my art bit and I was chuffed to receive my very, very 'own' pic! :D
The deadlines worked well for me and the pressure from the mods was just right and well timed.
While it was really nice to see so many pieces of art posted every day, sadly, for me it also meant that I ended up not commenting on quite a few works I really enjoyed (I'm a slow feedbacker) - but perhaps I can work on that for next time ;). It did feel good though that Yuletart wasn't too spread out timewise.

Thanks to the mods for doing such a great job and for being friendly, encouraging and prompt!

[identity profile] gryfeathr.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuletart worked out fabulously. I thought the deadlines were reasonable, and the reminders were often enough to keep me focused on getting it done. I liked the gradual posting--just enough to really get excited about, and over a nice amount of time, I think. Too long and it's hard to stay excited! I agree with [livejournal.com profile] ratcreature, I loved how the more condensed posting meant you got a nice handful of art of different fandoms each day.

[identity profile] sae.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Everything was run marvellously again this year. Thank you to all the mods for all of your hard work, it was definitely a great experience :D

2) My only suggestion for this lovely fest is a tweak with fandoms? I think it would be cool if, every time a fandom spans more than one version, we just automatically included each version for simplicity's sake once one of them gets nominated? People can obviously still be specific requesting or offering (like you said for splitting them apart, versions can vary like crazy), but in most cases it's pretty much the same fandom and it's almost a repeat nomation to have them be suggested one at a time. Maybe encourage, at the nomination phase, that people mention "oh, it comes in this verse, that verse, and that one" rather than "nominate the exact verse you want". I'm not sure if that works or not for each fandom, but it was a thought :)

3) I liked the deadlines.

4) The reminder worked, but I think one more reminder a little earlier (2 weeks before the new participant deadline?) would be awesome. I always tend to forget how short November is and I'm sure I'm not the only one who could use a head's up.

5) I liked the 5-6 posts a day. It keeps the anticipation reasonable for whichever poor souls happen to get their art last (it would kill me to have to wait until February for something if I finished my half in November XD;). It's also friendlier to larger numbers of participants, so as the fest grows we aren't waiting until March for reveals or something :)

[identity profile] mawaridi.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with #4! Reminders were good, but I did find myself scrambling a little once I received the new participants reminder (as an "old" participant I still had time to get it done, but I panicked a little!). I know it's my fault for being disorganised, but the more reminders the better, in my opinion :)

Even with that small suggestion for improvement, I thought the fest was totally awesome. Thank you mods, you are fantastic!

[identity profile] scribbleomania.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
This was, once again, completely awesome! My favorite thing to procrastinate for all year. The deadlines were good, and I liked getting a reminder or two without being inundated by emails.

I loved the multiple postings per day, actually. There was always a fandom or two I recognized per day. Plus...I'm so impatient. I liked seeing my art and my gift faster.

[identity profile] harbek.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I loved everything. It was brilliant. XD

The deadlines were nice, cause it meant posting actually started during Christmas. I really needed the reminders, too. I wouldn't mind more. I mean, as long as it's not several times a week, it's just reminding, not nagging.

I liked the amount and time of posting. Kept you excited, and wasn't too drawn out, and it was around Christmas. I obsessively check my flist, so I saw all the artworks without problem.

Polling sounds like a good idea. XD

You're awesome, mods. ♥

Thank you for all your hard work!

I love the variety of fandoms included, and I thought the posting schedule was just long enough, the deadlines were fine and the reminders were good. Hopefully the event will be even bigger next year *g*

[identity profile] 22by7.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
mods and related crew, awesome work. i'd never done a fandom gift exchange thing before and my response to this one is pretty much 'OMG THAT WAS GREAT LET'S DO IT AGAIN!' heeh.

1) What did you enjoy about Yuletart? - all the shiny fanart from all these different fandoms.
2) What would you like to improve about Yuletart? - i can't think of anything. i liked it fine as is.
3) How did you find the deadlines? - perfectly reasonable!
4) Did you get enough reminders/info about deadlines? - yeah, thanks for those, too :]
5) Were the 5 -6 art postings per day too many/not enough, too long/too short? - i thought they were just right. as others have said, it made for a nice variety of fandoms to look at every day.

Thank you guys so much for running this fest. I had a simply fantastic time, and the output has been so incredible and varied . . . [livejournal.com profile] yuletart is quickly becoming one of the highest points of my fannish year, and I already can't wait to go again.

I have to catch up on commenting, now that I'm back from my holiday travels!

As for feedback, I'm honestly mostly blanking for the moment. :) Maybe it would be good to have a brainstorming/discussion post sometime towards the beginning, so the participants can talk about nominations and requests (how best to formulate them, what everyone's interested in, swapping nominations perhaps)? A little more interaction could be fun.

Really, though, it was a remarkably smooth process. I preferred the deadlines and posting schedule this year - it was bad luck for me that I happened to be away for so much of December, but last year the deadline was so late that I ran a bit low on steam and didn't put as much energy in as I would have liked, which definitely was not a problem this year. I guess I also prefer a more concentrated holiday season to an extended one. *g* It was fantastic to have so much beautiful artwork to look forward to every day, particularly since it ameliorated some of the general stress of the season.

Thanks again, so much. ♥♥♥

Just wanted to thank you guys for organizing this -- I've never done an exchange before, and it was a remarkably fun, smooth, and rewarding experience. Most importantly fun. :D I can't really offer much in the way of helpful criticism. The deadline was perfectly reasonable, the reminders helpful and far from annoying (they were more like blaring subject lines in my inbox, like a note I'd written to Not Forget).

I prefer the holidays stay in December; it's hard to feel festive when it's 75 degrees and sunny in So Cal, so pressing it into one month is like the best advent calendar ever. Thanks again, the art and comments were great.

Just a note, "Knight of the Raven's Shadow" (Princess Tutu), links back to this entry. :)

I really loved doing this! I'm one of those people with a horrible slow connection (dial-up! 36.6! Oh, the pain!) and I didn't have much trouble seeing the art I wanted to see.
I LOVED the reminders. I want more reminders. Reminders are our friends.

Things to change...I only wish there were some way, besides compulsive LJ checking, to know when our (received) gift art is up. But there probably isn't.:P

Lots of fun (and I got a fizzgig!), and I hope to come back next year!

You can track the comm, and be emailed with every new post.

Though, if the mods go with my idea of adding artist and receiver tags, then you can just track the "receiver: yourusername" tag.
