This has been an extraordinary fest. Our drop-out rate and pinch hitter requirements were so low, I was incredibly impressed not just by the artist turnaround time by almost everyone, but also the amazing quality of art produced. Artists: you amaze me with your dedication to this. Thank you!

Thank you to my co-mods bzzinglikeneon and itsbeenvery, who did all the gritty stuff that I was too lazy/disorganized to do! This fest, like the fanartist community, was a joint effort.

Special thank you to our pinch hitters nightambre and craterchest, who were magnificent and intrepid. Thank you also to keraha, dun and adalanne for letting us re-gift - you're all life-savers!

Even more thank yous to everyone who left feedback, and promoted the fest on their own journals, and rec'ced their favourite artworks, and who just plain love fanart enough to encourage and comment and cheer. You're what make drawing in fandom so wonderful and rewarding.

Okay, I have a very, very interesting question that'll have to do with next year's challenge: My art medium is fairly... unusual I think is the word. (The end product would be something like this - artwork is my friend's since I'm still new to it.)

Would that be accepted for Yuletart?

Hmm! This is an interesting question. I'll answer it with some pointform, yeah? :D

- Obviously, as stated, we don't accept photomanips.
- We have and do accept photo collages/mixed media (http://community.livejournal.com/yuletart/44285.html#cutid1) as well as photography (http://community.livejournal.com/yuletart/15781.html#cutid1).

As for use 3D models, we will accept it if:
a) The 3D objects were modeled from scratch (ie modeled in Maya/XSI/D Max etc) and not a template/base model that's been posed (ie from Gimp, Poser, Sims game)
OR
b) there is enough of a paintover to exemplify that the 3D base was used as reference, not the focus. Similar to how an illustrator uses a photo ref.

What, exactly is a paintover?

I'm not much of an artist, lol, and don't know much of the terms - I just think it's kind of ridiculous of me to be watching the comm if I can't participate.

Edit: I'm not being difficult (at least, I hope not! If so I'll stop), just highly, highly curious.

Well, there are people who do watch this comm without creating fanart; they watch because they enjoy fanart. :D I don't think that's ridiculous. In fact, we encourage fanart-lovers to watch and participate by leaving feedback. They are part of what makes Yuletart such a great fest for many.

We are very receptive to unconventional forms of fanart, and have had participants who don't consider themselves, conventionally 'artists'. They just like to create and it's been quite successful :)

A paintover is...hmm! It's best if I use an image to explain it - I did a search on DA and found this lovely work (http://cosmosue.deviantart.com/art/Fire-Dance-68883302) - it's posed in Poser but painted over in Pshop. Please note: This is a very high standard art and just being used as an example of a paintover!

Okay, so using my friend's work again as another example since she and I would be using the same programs: Would this be accepted? That enough paintover?

Edit: UNCONVENTIONAL! That's the word I was looking for in my first comment! lol. And yeah, that was my first idea. Watching for the sake of admiring the pretty. :) But my need to participate is getting the better of me XD.

(My initial idea when I found this comm... I considered doing a needlepoint/cross stitch.)

Edit the second: I hope I'm not asking too many questions/for too much clarification. I just don't want to think I know what I'm getting into, and commit to do art for someone just to submit it and have you tell me you can't accept it, therefore having to call in a pinch hitter. I've pinch hit in fanfic exchanges and the time crunch is stressful. I think it's better for everyone that I clarify now, 10 months before the 2009 challenge, lol. I'm gonna need time to either a) teach myself how to paint over, b) figure out what else I could do or c) decided I'm not gonna sign up. XD

So, this is not my first participation and I won't comment anonymously because well, there's nothing to hide at that point. ^^"
For me the deadlines were perfect, maybe it wasn't for some people who participated in a few other challenges but for me it was great.
The reminders were very polite and believe me it's really appreciated !

My only "problem" comes from the art posting ; it was cool but... last year, the cool thing was that Christmas lasted for nearly a month or two and that was funny to receive gifts until February. But I understand if it was really too much work for the mods. Also, this year, as all the art was posted during the holidays, people weren't motivated to comment on five or six pieces a day, I know that I was with my family, didn't spend a lot of time on internet and I have to catch up and comment everything now. It's a bit sad because I remember last year people were giving much more feedbacks and discussing about the art. So maybe next year we could go back to the previous posting system ? If it's not too much for the mods, for sure, I can understand it's a lot of work.

It ran very smoothly this year and was a lot of fun. The deadlines worked okay for me -- I always tend to procrastinate anyway, but then usually buckle up, and the reminders were great.

I liked the 5-6 art posts a day, and that it was a shorter time frame than last year, because there wasn't such a long period between submissions and the many of the posts. It really felt like an event. And with a couple of artworks every day, I usually had at least one from a fandom I was familiar with at least in passing every day. I liked that.

I think the comment numbers aren't necessarily dependend on the posting schedule.

I mean, it could be for some people, like you say, but the main reason for me not commenting on art was that I didn't know the fandom. I know others like fanart whether they know the fandom or not, but for me I have to at least heard a bit about it to care and to think of anything to say. I don't know any of the manga/anime fandoms, because I'm just not into Japanese fandoms at all, and I didn't know all of books either, and only about half the tv series. I assume that is similar for a lot of participants. I liked that there were several posts a day, because that meant that usually at least one or two pieces would be from a fandom I know of.

I think that as some of the artists did an extra thoughtful work with this, the original pictures were also bigger, more detailed, and generally asking for high resolution internet publishing. However, for the viewing convenience and for keeping peoples' internet connections working, the picture sizes were asked to be kept reasonable.

Anyway. Maybe it would be a good idea to ask beforehand if someone would be willing to host high-res pictures in their domains for free? Or host them in the like-neon.com, I don't know who owns that (but thank you for that!). So, if it wouldn't be too much work (it might be), an option for an artist to also put up a high res/otherwise large (think wallpaper) picture would be nice. The high res would be linked from the regular size picture post. Just a thought.

Overall, I have nothing bad to say! the deadlines were smooth, the fandoms were varied, the reminder mails weren't irritating. I'm all good. Remember to send a reminder mail in ten months ;)

Hey! No don't worry about being troublesome, I think with so many wide variations of art online, this kind of stuff is highly pertinent and useful for future fests!

Oh, I did see that one when I was browsing through your friend's DA gallery and totally missed her description; but yes, that would have been an easier example for me to use - the pose is the only thing that's using the 3D base, and pretty much everything else has been painted in with an digital art painting program. :D

As a side, two things -
1) I think it's REALLY awesome that you are geared to teach yourself painting this year, partly to participate in Yuletart. It kinda gives me a little arty thrill. *hee*
2) Cross-stitch/needlepoint would be keen!

Ahahaha well. It was a spur of the moment decision on my part (shhh don't tell Anita and G!) and I could see that you had collaged and done some paintover with it; which, in the craftwork sense of things, worked for me.

I dunno man, like. Being a mod at spn_fanart with you, we have discussed the intricacies of trying to separate photomanips from the forms of art we accept....but like Nakedbee's awesome Firefly photograph of last year, I figured a mixed media photo collage took enough effort and creativity and story-telling skills to work. I'm glad others thought so as well!

However I will totes smack your wrists for not reading the rules! Naughty, naughty! XD

As for the second point, there does seem to be some discrepancy as to commenting trends. One thing I've noticed across the online fanboard is the lack of feedback in general - my sister participates in the fic-writing Yuletide fest and she said there has been a significant drop in comments all-round; and many other fests I've participated in this year have noted similar trends.

I've been trying to understand why, but that's a meta discussion about fandom participating for another day. :D

Addressing our method this year of posting a lot of art in a short period of time - honestly the mods are indeed fine either method - last year this method was what people asked for. There were concerns in 2007 that Yuletart dragged on too long and people lost interest/got impatient. However, I can totally understand your PoV which is that there's too much in too little time, and people get overwhelmed/have no time during the holidays.

I think to gauge a general participant opinion, perhaps we should take another poll to see what people think?

Ideally, it would be awesome to be the mad machine that Yuletide is and post them all on one day, and have it searchable by participant or fandom. :D But that'd mean we'd have to take it off-LJ. And I like LJ! XD

I really enjoyed seeing so much great art posted, some of it in fandoms I had never even heard of before. I also very much enjoyed doing my art bit and I was chuffed to receive my very, very 'own' pic! :D
The deadlines worked well for me and the pressure from the mods was just right and well timed.
While it was really nice to see so many pieces of art posted every day, sadly, for me it also meant that I ended up not commenting on quite a few works I really enjoyed (I'm a slow feedbacker) - but perhaps I can work on that for next time ;). It did feel good though that Yuletart wasn't too spread out timewise.

Ahhh, sorry about that! We weren't sure about the internet capabilities and it's unfortunate that yours ended up suffering.

I think for next year, we will have a size limitation that either people can follow, or we'll resize and then do the 'click on the image to see the larger version!' link. We did this with some of the images where artists provided a high res and a small sized versions of their art, so next year we'll just make it official. :D

Out of curiousity, how was it for your connection when it came to the posts that had multiple images?

Hooray!! Glad to know the deadlines and reminders worked. That seemed to be a success for most, and it really worked well for us. We had an AMAZING turnout this time around from almost all the artists who participated! Whatta record!

I totally understand the feeling of being overwhelmed by all the art. We had ti all spread out last year and people felt it it too *too* long, so we shortened the time this year to see if it was any different. We'll be conducting a poll soon enough, since this has been brought up before and I'd like to gauge participant's opinions!

Yuletart worked out fabulously. I thought the deadlines were reasonable, and the reminders were often enough to keep me focused on getting it done. I liked the gradual posting--just enough to really get excited about, and over a nice amount of time, I think. Too long and it's hard to stay excited! I agree with ratcreature, I loved how the more condensed posting meant you got a nice handful of art of different fandoms each day.
