Happy Yuletart, blood!

Title: Paleolithic Sunset
Gift for:[livejournal.com profile] blood
Artist:
Rating:: G
Fandom: Earth's Children by Jean M. Auel
Characters: Ayla, Whinny
Warnings: none
Artist notes: When I saw this in your wildcard requests, I had to jump at the chance to draw something in this universe; I loved these books so much when I was a kid that I even made myself a tiny little sling like Ayla's (though I was total crap at using it; I think my life expectancy in the Paleolithic would've been measured in hours). You'd said in your signup that you like crossovers and I swear to goodness I actually did start out planning this image to be a crossover, but when it came right down to it, the elements from the secondary fandom looked so out of place and just downright weird that I went with a straight-up Earth's Children painting instead. I hope you like it!
Summary: Ayla surveys her world.

ext_161: girl surrounded by birds in flight. (Default)

Your artist's notes are wonderful. *g* Oh, I love the watercolor here -- particularly the horse and the cloud, volcanic or sunset. This really captures the big-open-spaces-where-everything-is-baffling feeling I used to love about Valley of Horses.

Really my thoughts exactly. Lovely work, artist.

I love the blendings and gradation in the colors!

Thank you so much! (Secret artist confession: this is actually, like, three different watercolor paintings blended in Photoshop.) <-- fails at watercolor forever

This is great. I like how panoramic it is, with the huge empty landscape that dwarves the Ayla and Whinny.

Thank you very much! :) I really enjoyed making this -- the sense of grandeur and possibility from the books was what I was trying to capture.

I don't know this fandom, but oh, absolutely gorgeous. I love the colors, I love how small she is compared to the grandeur of the landscape, the wind in her hair; I feel like I'm standing there with her, blown away by what I'm seeing. I also love the type of horse you decided to draw :-)

Thank you so much! I don't think you have to know the fandom: woman + horse + Paleolithic pretty much gives you the plot of the whole series. *g* (Well, plus "lots of sex" but I didn't draw that. *g* WAIT, NO, NOT WITH THE HORSE, OH DEAR. I am doing the world's worst job of explaining these books.)

ANYWAY. I'm so glad you liked the art! One of the things I loved about the books was the sense of their wide, beautiful Ice Age world, and I wanted to capture that in this art.

This is beautiful, I love the way you did the color washes, the atmosphere is so peaceful.

Ohh, this is so tranquil and wonderful, with a beautiful sense of scale. Those watercolor washes look amazing.

Thank you so much! :) Embarrassing watercolor secret: this is actually several different watercolors blended in Photoshop, because I couldn't get it right the first (or twelfth) time. *g* PHOTOSHOP IS MY FRIEND.

Oh my god, this is absolutely gorgeous. The sunset just behind the mountains, and the shadows in the nooks and crannies, and how huge everything feels stretching out before them. I'm probably always going to picture Whinny exactly like this now. (When I was younger I wore an amulet like Ayla's everywhere for a year, and put rocks and wilting weeds inside.) Thank you so much! It was so unexpected to receive a gift for this fandom, and it's perfect, and I love it. You're amazing ♥♥

eeeeee, thank you! I'm so glad you like it, and so sorry for the late comment reply! :) When I saw your requests, this immediately jumped out at me from your wildcard fandoms -- it was one of my very favorite book series when I was younger, and I saw that you'd used a Clan of the Cave Bear icon on your post, and I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to draw something for it. :) Thank you so much for your lovely rec, as well!

Thank you so much! I have a confession here: mountains are my very favorite thing to draw. *g* I am prone to sticking mountains even where mountains should not be. BECAUSE THEY ARE FUN TO DRAW. And I'm delighted that you liked my mountains, and all the rest! :)

Beautiful. It's got so much feeling to it. (Also, least offensive sig ever. I didn't see it until the fifth time looking at the pic.)
sholio: sun on winter trees (Default)

[personal profile] sholio 2011-02-18 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the sig is the Yuletart mods, not me; heh. But yeah, especially given the nature of the piece, it really vanishes into it, doesn't it? I was a little worried when I saw the first couple posted and realized that the watermark was at the bottom and that was exactly where I'd put my center of interest, but then I saw my art and it just *works*.

... uh, apropos of nothing. >_> Anyway, thank you very much; I'm glad you liked it!

This is so pretty. I love the colors, especially on the mountains. I like how few lines you used and how you're able to give a very definite texture to the land with just the watercolors. Great pic!

Oh wow, this one is my favorite so far! The watercolor is perfect -- it looks almost like a cave painting! It's so surprising to see something from this line of books (surprising and wonderful!). :D

Thank you so much! I'm so sorry that this reply is so late. I don't think I've ever seen any art for these books - but I couldn't resist jumping on the chance!

Oh, this is lovely! I love the atmosphere so -- the tiny detailed Ayla and Whinny (all shaggy and steppe-pony-solid as she ought to be) and then the vast sweeping landscape. It captures all the best bits of the feel of those books.

Thank you so much! I'm so sorry that this reply is so late. I really enjoyed drawing steppe-pony Whinny. :D And I started from a mental image of this staggeringly huge Pliestocene landscape ... I'm glad it worked!
