Happy Yuletart, tingirl!

Title: Überwaldian Ratsody
Gift for: [livejournal.com profile] tingirl
Artist:  [livejournal.com profile] curtana
Rating:: G
Fandom: Discworld (The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents)
Characters: Keith, Malicia, Maurice, Darktan, Nourishing, Sardines, Dangerous Beans, Peaches, Big Savings, and miscellaneous other rats
Warnings: none
Artist notes: You said you liked creatures and companions and pets, so I hope this fits the bill! The buildings in the background were taken (and highly messed with!) from a stock photo. I have a much huger-sized version I can send you after the reveal :)
Summary: After the end of the book, Bad Blintz isn't so bad. Maybe it's even the kind of place Maurice would like to retire (after a few more adventures...)

Eeeeee, all the little mice! I think the cat is my favourite. <3 Love the costumes and the expression on the woman's face!

Thank you very much! :)

Gorgeous! That rat has a boater and cane! I've actually not yet read this one (woe), so am unfamiliar with the folk in it, but it's so *pretty*!

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It's a fun YA book if you can get hold of it :)

[identity profile] tingirl.livejournal.com 2010-12-28 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm torn between aaaawwww at the mice and the mood and the fountain and and bwaahaha at the sheer (novel accurate!) ludicrousness of the clothing. Knickers! Buckledy shoes! Great big hilarious poofy sleeves!

And gloriously peeved Maurice kitty! Awwww, again-- my first kit used to make that face when he was trying to maintain his dignity. Maurice has clearly lost the fight.

I love it! Thank youuuu!

You're welcome, I'm glad you liked it! :)

I'm not familiar with Discworld, but I like the picture. All the rats are very cute, and I like girl and boy.

Thank you very much! :)

This is gorgeous! The little rats are adorable (the one with a boater, eee), and I love the rat fountain. It has such a beautiful old storybook illustration feel to it. I really must read the Discworld books some time.

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it :) I'm glad the boater and cane showed up, I did this at a much bigger size and then when I shrank it down had some moments of panic about whether the details (like that) were still visible.

This is wonderful! So beautiful. :)

I am one of those strange people who still hasn't gotten around to reading the Discworld books, but this is such a charming picture! I adore the rat fountain, and the haughty-looking cat amidst all the rats <333

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I hadn't read them either until a couple of years ago, but I found once I started, I couldn't stop :)

I love all the rats and mice! Especially the fat rat bending over backwards on the right. Also: Rat Fountain! Haha!

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! The fat one bending over is Big Savings, the tough mama rat, and I like to think she's telling off the little ones who are messing about behind her back ;)

[identity profile] wellington.livejournal.com 2010-12-28 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That fountain is great. I wouldn't think you could make a rat fountain actually look elegant, but it is! I love the cat, its coloring, and the detail on its fur. And of course all the little rodents of various colors and sizes. Great picture!

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it :)

Oh, man. I never read this book, but it is so delightfully Discworld. I love it.

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It's a fun book, worth checking out even if YA isn't normally your thing, because it's very Discworld :)

Thank you! I tried to get as many of the named rat characters included as I could :)

I really like your charming storybook-illustration style. Everyone has so much personality and the rat fountain statue is very cute!

[identity profile] chalcopyrite.livejournal.com 2011-01-01 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's wonderful! I love the fountain, and how the rats look so *ratty*!

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I looked at OMG SO MANY photos of rats while I was drawing this to try and get poses that were plausible (well apart from Sardines, whose dancing is not at all plausible, but adorable nevertheless ;) so I'm happy that you feel that came through :)

[identity profile] glockgal.livejournal.com 2011-01-01 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG there is so much coolness going on here, I don't know the fandom but I'm completely entranced! All the different rats all doing their things and carrying on in the world, the cat monitoring their goings ons; and finally the two humans embroiled in a story of their own. It's all very multi-layered and fairy-tale like, which I love! The rat fountain! XD

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much! :) The book is a take-off of the Pied Piper story, so fairy-tale was definitely the atmosphere I was going for! Glad you liked it :)

[identity profile] jenzay.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Lovely painting, the lighting and textures really add depth to it. This is reminding me to read more Discworld (have only read Jingo so far).

[identity profile] curtana.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! They are such fun books :)

[identity profile] ani-bester.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know anything about this but this illustration makes me want to know, I want to go find the book and read it now. I adore this compistions and the coloring of it and just everything. Fantastic job!
