This is beautiful! I love the way many of the lines move in the same direction; it's so gentle and gives the picture a great feeling of movement, but also calm.

Thank you! It was completely accidental but I'm glad it works. :)

I love the Prince in this -- that is one well-characterized scarecrow. It all kind of reminds me of Miss Rumphius. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MissRumphiusBookCover.jpg) :)

Ooh! That looks like an awesome book, just from the cover. :)

I like how Sophie's hat is subtly fabulous, and how everything else is just really calming (the background!).

Oh, thank you! I wanted the hat to be more fabulous but old lady Sophie just wouldn't wear anything too outrageous. :)

[identity profile] ieke85.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
That scarecrow is fantabulous. He almost looks nonchalant, like he's leaning on the gate. Haha... and Sophie is having none of it!

I found it hard to come up with something for it - DWJ is very visual in her writing but, at the same time, there aren't many pictures in it, if you know what I mean?

(Probably not - I'm not sure I'm making sense. *g*)

I love that Sophie's hat is so awesome! She deserves it after all her hard work in the hat shop.... Love her sensible boots as well and the turnip-faced scarecrow. And even if green grass is foreign to you you did a great job :) I'm thrilled to see Howl's Moving Castle fanart here!

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. :) I just can't see her in anything other than sensible shoes, you know?

[identity profile] chrismm.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
:D I swear, I can see young Sophie in her eyes.

Aww, thank you! It's all really about the young Sophie. :)

Awww, Howl's Moving Castle fanart! Yay!

I love how you've coloured this picture. It's so calming and pretty.

Turniphead! :D Lovely job! Coming from a dry, warm place, too, I'd struggle with the green grass concept as well. ;)

Thank you! And seriously, it is hard. I was sending people these frantic emails going OMG, this looks wrong, why can't I get it brown enough to feel right?

It was a little tragic. *g*

[identity profile] ani-bester.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
oh very nice, it's good an old school charm to it. Reminds me of a watercolor portrait in some ways, but an active one.

It came out wonderfully!

Thank you! I was trying to get that sort of storybook illustration feeling so I'm glad it worked a bit.

Oh, thank you so much for the gift art: it was the best thing to wake up to this morning! I love Howl’s Moving Castle, I have the book and I’ve seen the film so many times. I’m particularly pleased that you chose the characters of Sophie and the scarecrow for the art. I really like how you’ve portrayed Sophie: even when she’s old you can so clearly see her youth. - If you had any problems with the greenery, it certainly doesn’t show (although when you mentioned Australia, I thought there was – in my own admittedly limited knowledge of the country – a slight touch of it in the landscape; the lone trees in a landscape that stretches to infinity). Love it! :D

(I am so sorry I didn't reply sooner - the reveals came out and I was busy and was all "tonight!" for uh... a while.)

I am so glad yo like it - I was torn because I know some of your other fandoms (and have some sketches roughed out for things for them, actually) but this one stuck. :) The green problem doesn't show because I was frantically IM'ing people from the UK going "Halp! I can't get the grass the right shade of brown..."

Ironically, I based the hill on a photo of someplace in England. My Australia filter must have been switched on at the time. :)

I'm glad you liked it. :)

Ahhh, this is so cool--I love her as the old lady best so I especially enjoy this. ♥ And you did nice work; the grass looks great! :)

Sophie was wasted as a young girl. She really was. :)

Nice work! There's a marvelous sense of flow and direction to this. I also really like the tiny details in the foreground grass, the hedge shading, the shadows on the path, etc . . . they do a lot to enrich the piece and enhance the sense of space. Also, Sophie has a great wary expression going on. :)

Thank you!

(Ahaha, oh man, the path shadows? That was when I got bored and decided that I just wanted it finished already.)

Wonderful! I like the whole quiet movement of the piece, the coloring is wonderful, too!

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. :) Looking back at it now on something other than my laptop, I think the colour is a little too saturated. Maybe I'll the less-bright version two at some point.

[identity profile] dramedy.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I love it! it's delightful and peacefull and there's a graceful movement to it! and yes, grass is green XD

So lush! Love that little bit of purple on the scarecrow's head, and the leaves in the bushes, and her perfect hat. :D

The coloring in this is breathtakingly pretty. I love how much movement is in this picture, especially with the scarecrow. Sophie looks fantastic as well, especially her hat and boots! Lovely work!

Thanks! She's all about the hat, really. I just can't see her ever setting out anywhere without one.

Amazing! The colours and the textures are gorgeous here, I feel like I can see the shirt and the leaves blowing, and the grass rustling in the wind.

I second the comment about the "gentle movement" of this picture; there's a slight sway, like the fields blowing in the wind. And the guarded, purposeful expression on the lady, and the myriad greens behind her! Well done!

I don't know HMC, but this is great! The scarecrow in particular is just brilliant in its simplicity and the way it sets a certain atmosphere.

This is so sweet! You captured one of my favourite parts of the story and seeing the sweet fairy-tale like energy in your art makes me wanna see the movie again. So darling!
