Giftart for Nightambre!

Title: Tea House
Gift for: [livejournal.com profile] nightambre
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] scribbleomania
Rating:: G
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Characters: Zuko, Iroh
Artist's notes: Watercolor on yupo (non-absorbant) paper. I drew inspiration from Chinese brush painting for this picture.
Summary: [livejournal.com profile] nightambre happened to request the two Avatar characters that I love most! Zuko and Iroh in a tea house, somewhere in the Earth kingdom. Iroh is happy, Zuko is sulky. As is the way of the world.

Thank you! :D It's a terribly fun style to do.

this is so cool. The style reminds me of the mini story in "the cave of two lovers" :)

Thank you! That story did inspire me to approach this in terms of brush painting and watercolor. Man Avatar has such beautiful, inspiring art all the time.

AWwwe, this brings tears! Very nicely done!

Thank you so much! *gives tissues*

eee! The mood of this piece is awesome. I love the broad strokes and minimalistic approach to detail. Despite that, it's very easy to see who's who, which is just great *.* I think what's best is the interaction, or lack thereof haha, between the two, which is what I loved most about the characters.

thank you so much!

I'm so glad you like it! I love love the interaction between Zuko and Iroh, too--it really made them my favorite characters in Avatar.

Let me know if you want the original painting, and I'll send it to you.

HOLY HANNAH this is just gorgeous, in every conceivable way! This style is so bold and rough but works *beautifully* in this context; you've used it in such a masterful manner that it only adds to the delicacy of mood and character instead of obscuring it. And the daubs of bright colour make the whole thing utterly delicious. This is just breathtaking!

[identity profile] scribbleomania.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I thought that this style was so *fitting* for Avatar, and especially Zuko and Iroh. Glad you think so, too!

I didn't even know they *made* non-absorbent paper, but the effect you get from it is really really cool. Probably wasn't easy to work with either.

[identity profile] scribbleomania.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It's really freaking awesome paper, but yes, hard to work with. I redid this painting a lot.

Gorgeous! Utterly in-character, lovely simplicity of line and colour. BRAVA!

[identity profile] scribbleomania.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm glad Iroh and Zuko have the character I wanted them to. :D

this is *gorgeous*. absolutely gorgeous. it's so Avatar-esque in the mood and feel and the layout, and the coloring is fantastic. The color scheme is just marvelously done, and the whole thing reminds me so strongly and powerfully of the earth kingdom. Wonderful work. Image

[identity profile] scribbleomania.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I am so glad this emulates the earth kingdom.

Eeeee I love this soooo much!!! I wish I had a wall hanging of this, so that I could wake up every morning to admire it. I love the inking, that imprecise yet beautifully poetic strokes and colour washes. It seems so poignant in this quiet space of time shared between uncle and nephew and tea. God, everything's so sublime. Fantastic art!

[identity profile] scribbleomania.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I always think of brush painting as "poetic" and wow, I'm flattered that you applied it to my piece!

[identity profile] sheepfairy.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I love the brush work on this - it gives the picture a nice sense of atmosphere, and I think it's a really appropriate style for an AtLA fanart.

[identity profile] dualbunny.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
The style of this is so much fun to look at. The detail in the ink is beautiful--it brings the whole piece so much depth. :)

[identity profile] elynross.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I really like this, the broad brush strokes, the stylized depictions. The inspiration from the Chinese brush painting is *very* cool.
