Happy Yuletart, mrsfrankenstein!

Title: The Island
Gift for: mrsfrankenstein
Artist:
Rating: PG13 (for language)
Fandom: Slings & Arrows
Characters: Darren Nichols, Geoffrey Tennant
Warnings: none
Artist notes: A million thanks to reflectedeve for art beta and to mkp-hearts-nyc and my sister-in-law for brainstorming and script beta!
Summary:

Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.

- The Tempest III.2

We're going to the island.
We're going to Centreville.
It's a perfect day for the island
At Centreville.
We could flume down the flume
And ride on the rides.
It's a day of chills and thrills
Get on over to the island.
To Centreville.

- Centreville theme song

Oh my god. Oh my god. I love this spectacularly. All of it is genius, but sulky Geoffrey on the carousel, Darren photographing the vomit, Darren's "mindless, pedestrian zombie culture" face, and Geoffrey looking like Dream in the bow of the boat -- BOTH GORGEOUS AND EVOCATIVE. ♥ ♥ ♥

Reading this was like dipping back into Sandman comics or some other good, engaging indie comic -- startling moments of poignancy, a nice sharp edge, wordy without being pretentious. Wonderful stuff!

OH MY GOD. I have not been this charmed in ages. This is glorious.

Oh my god this is amazing. I am SO happy that someone drew S&A art, and something this detailed! Wow this must have been a lot of work; I am duly impressed. Doing just one comic-style panel with a background/etc tends to defeat me/take forever...

I love your Darren and I lol-ed greatly at him trying to kill Celia because it's 'in the subtext' and literalizes her "patriarchal opression'. OH DARREN. I love you. :) Poor every-suffering Geoffrey... loved the carnival and Darren's disgruntlement at having enjoyed himself. Lol at 'mindless pedestrian zombie culture'. XD And Oliver's little appearance at the end is brilliant and made my inner Geoffrey/Darren fan squee... I could totally hear him saying that.

Anyway, gorgeous art and brilliantly done. I'm quite certain I know who the artist is, and you did a fantastic job. :)

This is deeply fantastic. I love all of it, but I think the pool of vomit is my favourite.

Not being in the fandom, I have no idea who these people are, but I still loved it. Very clever, expressive and fun! :D

[identity profile] olivia-circe.livejournal.com 2010-12-07 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS. Seriously -- everything about it is basically 100% perfect! Darren and Geoffrey and bloody As You Like It, and THE FREAKING TEMPEST, and the island metaphor, and the amusement park, and the duel to fun, and yeah, pretty much everything. LOVE.

[identity profile] zephre.livejournal.com 2010-12-07 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
fantastic! I laughed out loud - what a wacky adventure. And they're so recognizable throughout - great capture of the characters!

I LOVE THIS with the fire of a million suns. All the dialogue is just so perfectly in-character for Geoffrey and Darren, and the art is wonderful - changing into colour for Centreville is a great choice! I'm amazed at how you told an entire story, too. My absolute favourite panel is of them on the merry-go-round, but it's truly impossible for me to pick a second-favourite, as they're ALL so great. You are a genius! :D

[identity profile] handyhunter.livejournal.com 2010-12-07 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This is excellent! ♥

Darren's "To the FUN" face is epic.

I also really like all the colors in the carnival section in the middle. It makes a nice contrast.

Not familiar with this fandom, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading through all the nuances in this strip. YAY Shakespeare! Good job!

OH MY GOD THIS IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

Have. Have you been stalking me, o glorious anon-artist? Because As You Like It is my favourite Shakespeare play, and I used to go to Centreville EVERY SUMMER.

I am amazed at the amount of work that must have gone into this! Thank you SO MUCH.

I am unfamiliar with canon but clearly I must fix that. This is awesome, adorable and clever and funny, and you managed to get across a strong sense of characters really well even though I have absolutely no idea who they are :) The splash of colour in the middle make an effective contrast as well, both visually and narratively.

This is amazing! Very funny, so in character, I love the style switch for the carnival visit. Each panel is a lot of fun to read!

[identity profile] zarahemla.livejournal.com 2010-12-08 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much the best thing ever, especially where it segues into starting to look like Sandman.

[identity profile] dualbunny.livejournal.com 2010-12-08 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
This is brilliant--I know just enough about the show to appreciate how you've brought out the characters, and I don't need to have seen every episode to appreciate the beautifully expressive illustration work! :D

[identity profile] petronelle.livejournal.com 2010-12-08 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This made me shriek with glee repeatedly. I love the setup--it is so immensely Darren, and the duel to the *fun*--bwee! Geoffrey brooding on the merry-go-round is *perfection,* as are the panels where Darren is trying like hell not to enjoy himself. The conclusion--from the recitation on the boat to "I accept your concession" with the perfect neener-neener headtilt--made me beam, and the last tag made me cackle. \o/~

This is ABSOLUTELY GLORIOUS. I don't know this fandom at all, but I was totally swept away by this story, their delightful banter and companionship (the lack of barrels and the Necco wafer conspiracy, LOLOLOL!), not to mention the gorgeous artwork. I am thoroughly impressed and inspired by this, thank you!

[identity profile] wensleydale.livejournal.com 2010-12-08 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, overachiever anon! In a good way! The contrast between the color and the bw panels is great, and I dig your style!

[personal profile] runpunkrun 2010-12-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I love the way the style of the colored panels is simplified, more sweet and cartoonish, and then they get back on the ferry and it returns to dark, shadowy realism. I think my favorite panel is of them on the merry-go-round; it's all about how Geoffrey's leaning on the head of his horse.

Excellent job. You really captured their mannerisms and body language!

[identity profile] wellington.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
This is great! I don't know the fandom, but it still made me smile, and the characterization was great. I mean in just this short comic you get a really good feel for their personalities. And I really like how they seem to be progressively having a little bit more fun in each panel in the amusement park sequence. And of course the dialogue is very entertaining. Great work!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
This is INSANELY FANTASTIC. (This has got everything that I wanted from S & A--actual Shakespeare--but it failed to give me and so I bailed.) My jaw is so far fallen into my lap it's astounding. I want to link everyone to this and just tell them to appreciate it as brilliant original work because it's perfect that way.

Oh, this is amazing. The whole thing is lovely, but there's this one panel -- Geoffrey's face after Darren's "I am ambitious for a motley coat" -- that just slays me. SO WONDERFUL. <3

Well, you already know I love this, but I'm just going to say it again. :D The body language! The panel blocking! The transition between b&w and color! Oliver's intrusion! The Shakespearean story structure! You seriously blow me away.

So I thought I'd commented on these, but apparently not. I absolutely loved this. The switch from B&W to color and back again (and the stylistic changes accompanying them) is brilliant, and I adore your Darren to tiny pieces. And you've got Geoffrey's energy captured so well!

So much to love!
