Happy Yuletart, Mific!

Title: Death Gliders
By: Leyna
For: Mific
Media Used: Digital Painting
Rating: G
Fandom(s): Stargate Atlantis
Warnings: None
Summary: Steampunk!AU. The Pegasus Expedition journeys to a distant archipelago where they find the beautiful deserted City of the Ancients, awaken the deadly Wraith fleets, and become entangled in the politics of the God-Kings and their City-States. Here, John and Rodney escape from the city of the Serpent-God in stolen Death Gliders.
Notes: Thank you Mific, for the SGA inspiration. Your request for "Any setting. Any type of wings" got me speculating - in a Steampunk!AU are the Puddlejumpers and Death Gliders individual winged antigravity transports instead of small spacecraft? I chose to paint Death Gliders because the Goa'uld designs were gorgeous, and I wanted to play around with some of those elements – plus the thought of a SGA team vs Apophis confrontation was fun.

Oh this is GORGEOUS! Their winged outfits and the details of the Goa'uld tech are stunning. And Rodney's face, so delighted and wondering, and John's complicated expression looking down on him. I just love every part of it - the SKY! Amazing use of colour, and John and Rodney flying together, just as I asked for. Thank you so, so much!

I opened this in another tab without looking at the details, then went "HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING...must be drawn by Leyna" And sure enough... :) i really like the composition and worldbuilding too, like a cross between Gu'ald design and a Michaelangelo fresco.

What an intriguing scenario this painting suggests! Very cool!

This is incredible!

Their expressions are amazing, the composition makes me feel like I'm flying, and I love that Rodney's wearing a dress shirt under his breastplate. An original idea with great design.

Breathtaking! I love the concept, and the breastplate/wings are gorgeous and so interesting. And their so expressive faces, just gorgeous.

That is just lovely, the colour and composition and the faces. Just gorgeous.

I don't think that the Phryne Fisher mysteries have made it over the ditch yet - but I adore the books and want to see what's what with the tv show. (And oops, that refers to the comment you made in your personal LJ rather than here. Too much Xmas?)

I'm glad you like it. Thank you for the inspiration!

As soon as I saw your prompt I had all kinds of ideas. What would puddlejumper wings look like? What would Rodney be doing (craning his head trying to see the mechanical aspects, looking wide-eyed and unsettled? geeking out?). Is John more distracted by the joy of flying or Rodney's reactions? Then I saw a gorgous photo of a stormy sky over wheat fields, which inspired the colours of this and for using the bronze goa'uld designs instead.

Oh, my Gods, that is so gorgeous! The sky, their faces, their hands, the amazingly cool wings... You win everything with this, as far as I'm concerned.

And now, as usual, I'm hoping someone decides to write the story that goes with this. If I could write my way out of wet tissues paper, I'd do it myself, but I can't hold a plot together to save my life.

Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent! I always love your work, even when I'm not in the fandom, but it's even better when I am. *g*

The more I look at the picture (and I have been, quite a lot!) the more the feel of it, and the colours, reminds me of old icons, with John and Rodney as angels or seraphim or something similar - with several sets of wings. The colours have that glowing bronzy-gold richness. *hugs picture*

Old icons, and renaissance angels were definitely part of the inspiration, once I had the colour palette sorted :D

Thank you! I loved the prompt, and I've always loved the goa'uld tech designs, so this was a great chance to play around with that.

:D I laughed and I'm very flattered, too!

Renaissance angels were very definitely a design inspiration once I'd decided on the colour scheme, and I had fun thinking about this AU while I was painting.

Thank you :) I think my favourite paintings to work on are the ones with intriguing scenarios or stories attached.

This is so incredibly gorgeous! It really does remind me of Renaissance art, like there should be symbolic meaning in the gestures of their hands and the directions of their gazes. And the clouds behind are wonderful: John's got a halo of sorts!

Thank you! I like the way the composition of this turned out (design not being my strong point!)

Rodney's dress shirt is one of the few elements remaining to show it is a steampunk AU concept. I like to imagine he was annoyed because his suit jacket wouldn't fit under the armour, and he had to leave it behind in the escape :)

Thank you! I had a burst of inspiration on this one (concept, colour palette, and design) - which is always a great way to start a painting :)

Thank you!

:D The Phryne books are a lot of fun, and I really loved the series, too. It is also fun, and gorgeous looking, and all the cast are great. It has a few differences from the books - mostly some extra plots introduced and extra backstory for Phryne.

The actress playing Phryne is wonderful, but she is older than book Phryne, which gives an slightly different (but interesting) spin to it. They also cast a charming actor as Inspector Jack Robinson, who is a similar age to Phryne, so he is no longer the avuncular book character (who admittedly wasn't one of my favourites). TV!Jack has awesome chemistry with Phryne, too, which the show is very well aware of and is playing up.

Oh . . . my. The sky. Their poses. The Goa'uld collar and hand device. Rodney's utterly rapt expression. John's hair. ;) The guys are quite reminiscent of Michelangelo angels, wings, "halos," and all. And such beautiful colors . . .

As usual, you did GOOD, bb!

Thank you! I found a gorgeous photo of wheatfields under a stormy sky, which ended up being my colour palette and sky inspiration, and that in turn inspired the concept.
